Culture and nature invite you to the ridges of Riihimäki

3.10.2025 News Blogs Plan

Travelers to the Riihimäki region don't have to choose between cultural attractions and nature vacations, as there is a diverse range of both available.

Did you ever wonder as a schoolchild what really goes on behind the closed doors of the teacher's office? No need to wonder anymore, because the Riihimäki Theatre is revealing the secret in its new musical comedy.

Opehuone, written by Niina Lahtinen, stars Lahtinen herself, as well as Ernest Lawson, Krisse Salminen and Christoffer Sandberg. They are responsible for all 40 roles in the show.

The audience will also be entertained in the Riihimäki Theatre's 2025–2026 season by the musical parody Titanique, in which Eurovision winner Celine Dion ends up as a passenger on a sinking ship, as well as the hilarious Let's joke again songs by guest comedian Mikko "Tökä" Töyssy and his accompanist Mikael Konttinen.

In October, the legendary Seela Sella and Esko Roine will visit Riihimäki Theatre, and the theatre will celebrate Saituri's Christmas, the biggest celebration of winter.

Theatre and music lovers can find information about the offerings of the entire region, i.e. Riihimäki, Loppi and Hausjärvi, on the websites of the municipalities and Visit Riihimäki, which also provide information about the upcoming program of the nationally famous summer theatre Miinan Montu and the events of the Kolmilammi dance stage.

The brilliance of glass

Art enthusiasts should also stop by the Finnish Glass Museum on their trip to Riihimäki, which will present two significant Finnish masters in the fall of 2025.

The award-winning exhibition Broken Curtain by Heikki Orvola (b. 1943), who has just been awarded the Pro Vitrea award, opens a view of the glass expert's entire incredible career.

Visitors have the opportunity to learn about Orvola's experiments, most famous works, and working methods, such as the "broken veil" technique originally developed by Kaj Franck, which is used to conjure up a colored outer or inner surface of a glass object.

Soile Yli-Mäyry's Tuhkan siivet offers the first comprehensive overview of the glass art of the artist known for his sculptural paintings. The solid glass used by Yli-Mäyry also makes his glass works unique, sculptural creations.

The museum's permanent exhibition tells the story of glass and, more broadly, Finnish glass design in a nutshell.

For a fall hike or a refreshing dip

There are excellent opportunities for autumn hiking in the Riihimäki region in Loppe. The well-known potato farm has no less than a hundred kilometers of marked outdoor trails, the most attractive of which are the Samo trails located in the Komio nature reserve.

The routes crisscross the stunning ridge landscapes, from lingonberry patches to fern groves along the banks of spring streams. The marshlands are easily crossed along boardwalks, and it is nice to stop for a snack at the well-equipped and maintained rest areas.

For those traveling in wheelchairs or with strollers, a dedicated, barrier-free route has been built, allowing you to fully enjoy nature while still being able to do so effortlessly.

You can also get to the heart of the beautiful Kantahämä nature at Hausjärvi, where people who enjoy water and who enjoy it have found their way.

During the thaw, you can travel along the Vanajavesi canoeing route that flows through the historic parish from the top of the Kokemäenjoki River all the way to the open Vanajanselkä.

Year-round water lovers will be delighted by Hausjärvi's famous winter swimming spots at Ykslammi and Valkjärvi, where you can also relax in the summer.

Those who yearn for heights have also been remembered, as both individual tourists and groups are flown into the sky from the Räyskälä Aviation Center in Loppa.

A roof over your head and gifts for your family

For example, from the Helsinki Metropolitan Area, you can easily explore the Riihimäki region during the day, but overnight stays can also be arranged without any hassle.

The Teatterihotelli and Seurahuone in Riihimäki offer accommodation for large groups in the city center, and the Lempivaara camping area, close to nature, is a few kilometers away for caravanners and campers.

You can try glamping, or luxury camping, at the Metsä-Nummela farm in Loppa and enjoy traditional cottage living, for example, at Niklandia in Hausjärvi.

There is almost no shortage of attractive shopping places in the region. You can pick up some stuff for your souvenir bag at, for example, Havi, Joutsenen and Sarafaani factory stores, Mommila village shop, Saviheinä, Punainen Tuva or Pelto-Seppälä farm.
