8.1.2026 News Events Events

The Hausjärvi youth's own musical, Grandpa's Pocket Watch, will premiere on Saturday, January 10, 2026 at 4:00 PM at the Oitti Juhlatalo. The traditional musical production, which will be held for the 14th time, will bring together nearly 60 middle and high school youth, who will be responsible for the roles, band and choir of the performance, all the way to the set, make-up, costumes, marketing and cafeteria.

Grandpa's Pocket Watch tells the story of Visa, who, after her father's death, sets out to find out what kind of person he was and why the relationship remained distant. Visa's grandmother, friends and new crush support her on her journey as she learns to deal with her grief and understand herself better. The work reminds us of how events from generations ago continue to affect us and shape us as people.

The history of musicals in Hausjärvi

Musicals have been produced in Hausjärvi since the 1997 school year. The nearly thirty-year musical streak is an achievement for a small town, and a testament to the successful and inspiring teaching of music teacher Jukka Palonen. Palonen has been involved in producing musicals familiar to Hausjärvi residents from the very beginning. The idea for musicals came about together with Risto Autio and the first work was called Mikä Sotku (What a Mess) (1997). Over the years, talented young people from Hausjärvi have emerged from traditional productions to the world, such as the new generation singer-songwriter and actor Antti Autio, who wrote the hit song Pihkassa.

A joint effort of young people

The production of the performance is being carried out by HaTu ry – Hausjärvi Comprehensive School and High School Support Association. This year, Hyria Media students and their teachers will also be involved to handle sound and lighting technology and recording. In addition, several local associations and companies support the musical. Hausjärvi Middle School and High School students undertake a huge effort every other year. Their own musical is a source of joy and pride and a counterbalance to their academic subjects.
