Glassblowing
Glass artist Marja Hepo-aho works in a glass studio located in the old Riihimäki glass factory together with master glass blower Kari Alakoski. The studio's Mafka products combine traditional glassworking with modern, yet timeless design. Hepo-aho brings unique objects into everyday life. The inspiration is often based on human stories. The artist wants glass products to be durable, practical and of high quality.
– I draw a lot from mythical stories, legends and national heritage. The everyday objects are often purely Scandinavian, but you can go more wild with art glass. In my work, I also take a stand on the relationship between man and nature.
You can watch glassblowing on site. Professional glassblowing is fascinating and the process of making a glass object is exciting to watch. You can also book a glass experience night at the studio, which starts with a glassblowing demonstration. After that, participants get to design and blow a unique glass object. When the objects have cooled, they are signed, and you can take your lovely new glass objects home. They also have longer courses on glassmaking.
– It is important to be open, and that is why we always have open doors! In the glass studio you can see how a domestic, ethical glass object is created. People are welcome to watch how mouth-blown glass art and everyday objects take shape!
