How to plan a fishing trip to the Riihimäki region

There are numerous lakes in the Riihimäki region, and especially in Loppi, but which ones are worth going fishing? We asked the entrepreneurs at Seastar Events Oy in Loppi for advice on planning a successful fishing trip. Loppijärvi is a large lake in the municipality of Loppi, but it is relatively shallow. According to Vesa Meritähti, the lake is a very good fishing spot.

– There's plenty of pike perch in the lake. You can also catch pike and perch, he says.

Local fishermen know to steer their boats towards the lake's deepest spots to find fish to catch. The water in the shallow lake warms up in the summer, and during warm times the fish head to the cooler water in the deep parts of the lake.

A region full of lakes

There are a large number of different lakes in the Loppi region alone. Anglers should prepare in advance by finding out what kind of boat launch is available on each shore.

For example, there is a concrete ramp at the Kirkonkylä beach in Loppijärvi, which is suitable for launching and lifting boats transported on trailers.

On the shores of many other lakes, however, there are graveled landing sites suitable for launching smaller boats. Gravel landing sites can be found, for example, at Sähkönokka harbor in Kaartjärvi and Takala harbor in Punelia.

Marjo Meritähti highlights Luutalammi as a potential worm fishing spot, where you can catch dark perch.

– On the other hand, there are trees and other things at the bottom of the water that the hook can easily get caught on, Meritähti points out.

And what would be a good place to go ice fishing in winter? The Meritähtis suggest that Lake Kaartjärvi, for example, is a good ice fishing lake.

The amount of fish you catch isn't always the most important thing

Vesa Meritähti says that for Seastar Events' customers, the catch not always the most important thing.

– Often the most important thing is not to catch a huge amount of fish, but rather that the customers get to go out into nature, says Vesa Meritähti.

If you do want to get a good catch, you should go fishing starting from August and September, when the waters start to cool down.

In practice, the fishing season starts when the ice breaks up in the spring and continues until the water freezes again. In the summer, July in particular can be a challenging month for fishermen in terms of catch, but this can also wary from lake to lake.
